Whitening Overview
Whitening, or “tooth bleaching,” is one of the most common cosmetic dental procedures. It is a safe and effective process for most patients. Whitening options include over-the-counter products such as strips and gels, as well as professional dentist-supervised treatments.
Laser Whitening
Laser whitening involves covering the gums with a rubber dam and applying bleaching gel to the teeth. A laser beam accelerates the process, activating the chemicals and whitening teeth up to six times more effectively than other methods.
Whitening Strips and Gels
Whitening strips contain peroxide gel and fit over the front surfaces of teeth. They are typically used twice daily for 30 minutes over two weeks, improving tooth color by one or two shades. Whitening gels are applied with a small brush and offer similar results.
Whitening Rinses
These rinses contain hydrogen peroxide and work gradually, usually requiring three months of consistent use to lighten tooth shade.
Whitening Toothpaste
Whitening toothpaste contains mild abrasives and sometimes peroxide. They remove surface stains and can lighten teeth slightly over time, though they do not provide dramatic results.
